How I got the shot: Magnet @ Tall Ships Races

In Concerts, How I got the shot

Look like you belong

During last summer, I had the opportunity to shoot at the Tall Ships Races in Bergen. Probably the hottest summer I’ve ever experienced and the sunsets were spectacular. During the race, about 100 concerts took place in three days at the dock. This shot, I got on the last day. For two days, I had seen just how wonderful the sunset looked, but couldn’t get any good angles to capture it. Generally, I always follow the rules as best as I can, but this day, during the performance of Magnet, I just had to sneak up on stage to get the sunset and the ships in front of him. “Just look like you belong”! I was up there for just a few seconds and got exactly what I wanted. In my opinion a great shot is sometimes worth getting in trouble for (not that I did this time).

To balance the sunset with the stage lights, I had to push the midtones and shadows, in addition to pulling down the highlights. I also added a lot of saturation to give justice to the sunset, but I think it’s important to keep it realistic and not go overboard, like I see so many other photographers do. Everything done in the RAW conversion in ACR with just a light dodge/burn in Photoshop.
